Obedience

Obedience events test the training of dogs as they perform a series of exercises at the command of their handler.

There are several levels of competition, ranging from basic commands such as “sit,” “come” and “heel” to scent discrimination and directed retrieves over jumps. The classes are further divided by the experience of the handler as well. All dogs start their competition with a perfect score, and points are deducted according to the performance of dog and handler.

Obedience events offer an opportunity for the handler and dog to form a special bond of trust unequaled in other events.

AKC has specific regulations for performing various moves in obedience. The dog and handler have 200 points on entering the ring. As the judge judges their performance, points are subtracted for mistakes.  Commands or hand signals can be used in the lower levels. Dogs are lined up in a row and told to “stay” as the handlers walk to the other side of the ring and wait for the judge’s command to return to their dog. This is also done in the down position. Dogs must stay in the position that the handler told them. As the dog moves up to the open and utility level, some jumping, retrieving, scent discrimination and distance work are performed. The dog must qualify in three trials to receive a title.
